[video][sound][extras][conclusion]

Marc Daly (David Hemmings) is a Jazz pianist living in Italy who witnesses the horrific murder of a renowned psychic. With the help of a tenacious reporter he sets off on an obsessive and ineffectual investigation to track down the sadistic and determined killer, who will stop at nothing to keep their identity a secret.
video
Profondo Rosso has been released here by Vellavision as part of their 'Clasico de Terror' series. This is a theatrical version of the film, which looks grainy, a tad off colour - the deep reds look more like dirty pink. On the whole the print looks dull, like it was put through a washing machine before being transferred.
sound
The English soundtrack is pretty good. We have David Hemmings' original vocals, which after years of watching Italian dubbed versions freaked me out. The sound is pretty good, not sure how it would stand up being fed through a home entertainment system (I am poor and cannot afford one myself), so the jury is out on that one. Watching the film with its Spanish dub is quite funny, I want to watch a Chinese version next, which I am hedging my bets will be funny as Hell.
extras
The dvd menu is kind of cool, a little snippet of the Goblin soundtrack thrown in with a few shots of the little blond haired child holding up the bloodied carving knife (I will not say his name in case you have not seen it yet!) and then some more shots covering basically the whole movie. Not bad.

We have the obligatory scene selections, production photos, poster designs from around the globe, filmographies for Dario, David and Daria, a cast and crew list and finally trailers for the other films being released by Vellavision, namely two Troma movies, Jess Franco's Killer Barby's and Dellamotre, Dellamore. Each time you pick one you are transported to the menu with the little mechanical puppet with its head hacked off, laughing his ass off while still trying to walk.
conclusion
One of the key Giallo films in Argento's canon and still one of the only films I can mention that makes me afraid of nursery rhymes and black leather gloves. Nothing here to get wet over I am afraid. The extras are as thin on the ground like an aging man's hairdo. On the plus side the infamous Lizard scene is intact!
