The following is the prologue to the book "SERIAL KILLER - Guida ai grandi assasini nella storia del cinema" published by DATANEWS Editrice S.r.l.,Roma - 1994 by Fabio Giovannini.

Translated by Akis Kapranos

"The "Monsters" of the criminal chronicles always arouse a kind of sick interest - there is always fear lurking beneath curiosity. In Italy this happened with the "Monster of Florence", however, I must remind you that a very similar incident has happened in New York. The one with the "Son of Sam". In real life, his name was David Berckovich and he committed his acts during 1976 and 1977, mainly in the Bronx, until he was arrested and sentenced to 365 years in prison.

Like Jack The Ripper, Berckovich was having great fun by sending letters to the police, signed "Sam". I was in New York by that time and I vividly remember that fear was getting stronger and stronger in the city. They were saying that the maniac prefered to kill woman with dark, long hair, and for that reason, many girls had their hair cut short. None hung around by themselves but always in the company of friends.

This is the fear of the serial killer, a figure that can hide anywhere in the asphalt jungle of our cities. But personally, these "crime chronicles", with the real crimes and slaughters, don't inspire me at all. If some of my stories strongly resemble some real facts that have been written, it's just a coincidence. Nor am I attracted to newspaper articles that concern killings and murders. But it is certain that today, the limits between invention and reality are undefined. The REAL serial killers are starting to "produce" successful cinematic adaptations, and these faces can even become sympathetic or even touching, like the one in "Henry - Portrait Of A Serial Killer".

In this book of Fabio Jiovannini, with the help of very interesting material and sharp observations, you will discover that, to transfer the deeds of serial (or not) killers to the silver screen, you don't just have to present their chilling acts or their violent biographies.

A great cinematic art is required.

Giallo
(pronounced 'djallo, plural gialli) is an italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the french fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism.

The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.
