dario in the woods
|
Alan Jones writes:
"Three witches. a girl's school deep in a foreboding forest, whispering trees, an Alida Valli look-alike teacher and a gifted student who must find out what's going on between classes. No it's not the MOTHER OF TEARS opening, or a SUSPIRIA redux. It's Lucky McKee's latest trip to the well of Argento influence. In his debut MAY, McKee paid homage to Dario in both plot and dialogue. In the long-shelved THE WOODS he has literally crafted a SUSPIRIA for the latest tween generation. It's a film that will be of most interest to Argento fans. It isn't as good as MAY - the plot gets more unfocused as it wends its way to a slam-bang finale after a slow build up. But it proves McKee has talent even if he has misjudged the core audience for it. Well acted - Patricia Clarkson is smouldering evil personified, restrained for a change Bruce Campbel, terrific lead Agnes Brucknerl - and shunted around for three years since producer United Artists got sold off, THE WOODS is old school horror in both senses and well worth a look for SUSPIRIA completists." |

Simon Boswell
|
From this years frightfest brochure:
Look out for an extra-special surprise addition to the Zone Horror FrightFest list of extras. Simon Boswell, composer of music for Phenomena, Demons 2, Stagefright and Santa Sangre, will be previewing his new album ‘Close Your Eyes’ released by Flick Records in September. It comprises much of his past key soundtrack work, including Perdita Durango and Shallow Grave, chopped up and reassembled as new pieces with additional vocals provided by actors Ewan McGregor, Ray Winstone and cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Simon will also be unveiling the Richard Stanley directed pop promo for the original track ‘Tripping the Dark Fantastic’ featuring Dario Argento rapping! Simon will give an on-stage interview about this project and provide copies of the highly anticipated album as prizes. |

dario rapping!
|
Alan Jones writes:
"Hi Nick, if you read my book 'Profondo Argento' you may recall that in the Simon Boswell chapter he mentions producing an album of his most famous scores newly rejigged. Well that album will finally be released in September under the title 'Close Your Eyes', not 'Settling Old Scores' as he previously told me. We may well do a Boswell Showcase at this year's FrightFest geared around the album's release if we can fit it in because on the album he has Dario doing a rap, and Alejandro Jodorowsky (SANTA SANGRE) chanting.
Simon tells me he filmed Dario rapping too. Now that's footage I really want to see."

suspiria fashion
|
Alan Jones writes:
"Hi Nick, Just when you thought I couldn't write anything more about suspiria, the IPC men's magazine 'Fashion Inc' asked me to contribute a piece on the movie for their Autumn/Winter issue (published end of September) with the overall theme of 'The Darkside'. Nothing about the story, everything about the look, design and decor and why it remains a style landmark. Had fun writing it I must say and the lay-out should be good." |

Giallo
(pronounced 'djallo, plural gialli) is an italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the french fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism.
The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.
