I recently contacted Asia and asked her if she would answer some questions in a sort of 'cyber interview'. I did not really expect a reply but imagine my surprise when I actually got one and she asked me to send the questions! She chose not to answer them all as some were a bit 'on the edge' as she put it.
However, I am very grateful that she took the time to answer any of them.

Grazie Asia.
January 2000

Do you have fond memories of your childhood?
Yes, I do have some good memories of my childhood. What bothers me the most is that I don't remember the long afternoons, times when nothing happened and I just stared at the light coming through the shutters... In my memories childhood is one long afternoon of "mother scenes" those horrible moments that you'll never be able to forget.

With both parents in the film business, do you think you were destined to be an actress?
I don't know if I was destined to work in films. It sounds kind of sad to put it that way. Life, DNA, destiny, fortune... My sister Fiore doesn't work in films, she's a shoe designer. Was she DESTINED to be that? Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to me if I was the daughter of two plumbers. Would I be one too?

I first saw you in Michele Soavi's La Chiesa, a sometimes-brilliant film. What are your memories of working on it?
While I was shooting La Chiesa, I was also in Sicily shooting Palombella Rossa with Nanni Moretti, which was a nightmarish tense set - I remember going back to Budapest to Michele's set and feeling "at home" even though I was surrounded by The Devil.

Is the bond between you and your Father very deep?
Of course our bond is deep. "Word is Bond". We are very close, we are able to work together and create something as eternal as a film. When we'll be gone our films will still be here. And besides that, I'll be forever grateful to my father because he gave me the best thing that's ever happened to me since I was born: he gave me LIFE!

Do you feel that Dario selects you as his leading lady because of your acting ability?
Sometimes I think my father gave me LIFE because he needed a lead actress for his films.

As your English is very good, why is Anna's voice not your own on the English language version of Stendhal?
People didn't think my English was good enough. They dubbed Stendhal behind my back. I am very pissed off about it.

Is it your own voice in Il Fantasma Dell Opera?
Yes it was my real voice in the Phantom.

Was Il'Fantasma Dell Opera the first period drama that you have worked on?
No, before that I worked on La Reine Margot (I was 17), a French film. Right now I am working on another period film Les Miserables, with Gerard Depardieu and John Malcovich.

You have obviously embraced the Internet as a way of communicating with your fans. Is that the reason behind your own site?
The web site in made by the fans. For me, the Internet is the best way of communicating. Since I am a little agoraphobic, I like being alone in my apartment - and still being surrounded by everybody.

Your new film, Scarlet Diva, is your debut as writer and director. What is it about and did you enjoy making it?
My film Scarlet Diva is something that I've written by myself last winter. It was very hard to find finance since it's a very tough story, and unfortunately, I live in a country ruled by television, and if a film isn't politically correct it'll be hard to find the money. But I did. I succeeded. I directed 50 actors, in 40 different locations. London, Paris, Naples, Rome, Amsterdam and Los Angeles. I don't want to talk about the story. Soon you'll hear about it.

Giallo
(pronounced 'djallo, plural gialli) is an italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the french fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism.

The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.
