| Welcome to the largest site on the internet dedicated to Dario Argento - one of the most stylish and visually imaginative director's alive today. This is not intended to be a sycophantic 'shrine' to him but a place for information and enlightenment and hopefully you will leave knowing more than when you came. There are all sorts of cool things within these pages - reviews, filmographies, biographies, interviews, slideshows, video/audio downloads and a forum. For an attempt at explaining why I like his films, click here |

No Dario at FrightFest
|
Alan Jones writes:
"Just to let you be first with the bad news. Because Dario's new RAI TV movie DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? doesn't start production until July 27, the delayed six week shooting schedule means he can no longer be with us at FrightFest. We've both been trying all week to make it possible - hard to do as Dario's been in Barcelona casting the movie - but we had to give up today. HITCHCOCK's demanding six days a week shoot in Turin has been impossible to circumnavigate. I also thought we'd have to drop THE CARD PLAYER from our line-up too as Arrow announced its early August DVD debut. But that now has been shifted to October so we will still be showing the movie for those of you who want to see it on the big screen.
HITCHCOCK is an interesting script actually. It revolves around young Guilio who's studying the master's films in his media class. An important exam is about to come up so he decides to cram extra information. Going to the local video store he's about to rent STRANGERS ON A TRAIN when two other women try to do the same. Later on, when one of women's mothers is killed, he's convinced the two entered a similar pact as depicted in the movie. From then on other Hitchcock homages from his classic back catalogue are interlocked with Dario's own motifs in a twisting tale of sleight of hand suspense. I'll be on the set in mid August and will report back then. But there's good news concerning my book 'Profondo Argento'. I've been captioning and proof reading it for the past couple of weeks and I'm thrilled with how Harvey Fenton at FAB Press has designed it. I'm adding more info into the captions for extra texture and my own personal photos really do work in context. Of course the rush to get the book ready for the FrightFest launch has also been undermined by Dario's non-appearance. Harvey tells me it might be avaiilable beforehand now so you should be seeing the promotional ads appearing soon. I'm so happy with the book I can't tell you and the weird thing is, even though it's focused on Dario, it actually has turned into an overview of the entire Italian film industry. I think that's one of its greatest strengths.
A bit late I know but I did want to tell you to ignore the bad press about Asia's movie THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS. I've added a lengthy section on the movie in the book for that reason as it's way too interesting to ignore. I was no fan of SCARLET DIVA. I thought it was ludicrous. But HEART is something different and really proved to me that Asia could amount to a director of equal stature to her father. There's one moment in it that I haven't stopped thinking about. It's where Sarah (Asia) dresses up her son Jeremiah in girls' clothes and then take his fantasy place in the ufolding abuse scenario. It's clever, tasteful and amazing. I hated JT Leroy's book and wondered how she could possibly adapt it. But she handles everything really adeptly and the performance levels from the kids and cast are exemplary. She was visibly upset by the critical lambasting when we met up at Cannes, but she's inherited her father's grit enough not to let it affect her for long.
Can I end this endless drone by telling you that me are considering showing PROFONDO ROSSO in a morning slot at FrightFest. Platinum DVD, who are putting out an Argento box set in October (comprising, BIRD, CAT, PROFONDO and PHENOMENA), have a fabulous print and have offered it to us. Can I ask everyone out there to let me know through your site if they'd like this to happen?" |
