Watched the LUPIN III vs DETECTIVE CONAN anime a couple of days ago. There's a brilliant download of this available with HQ video and mostly excellent subtitles. More fun from the ever reliable Lupin gang. The addition of Conan to the cast makes for some extra laughs.

"From the makers of CTHD and Hero"......hmmmm, so Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou, Yuen Wo-Ping, Tan Dun, Chris Doyle and Peter Pau, they all got together for this one. Can't go wrong.

The carnage from the previous episode continues, Alucard still waits it out but there's some plot progression as far as other characters are concerned and the the scope of the battle makes it okay to draw out a bit: finish things up too quickly and it would lose the epic feel. Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if this battle carries us through to the end of the series, but I'm unfamiliar with the manga from this point. Surely the best OVA series out there at the moment.

Finished up DEVILMAN LADY.

The dub is excellent, of course there are script changes, but nothing drastic.

The manga is full on - lengthy, complicated, extremely violent and graphically sexual, and really requiring knowledge of Go Nagai's Devilman universe to really appreciate. The anime adaptation is a different kettle of fish - an atmospheric, apocalyptic doom and gloom fest with plenty of time for plot and character development amongst the beast battles. As it is its own story, there's a proper ending, too. Nagai-style character artwork is great.

Up next: CLAMP's X television adaptation, more doom and gloom with moral dilemmas with people who have the fate of the world on their shoulders, directed by the great Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

X

I've dedicated a fair bit of time in the last couple of weeks to the world of X, as created by CLAMP. With not much new stuff out I've been able to revisit some of my favourite anime titles of late and X is no different.

X is CLAMP's apocalyptic action/horror/drama shojo manga epic, featuring the final battle for the fate of Earth between those chosen to save humanity and those chosen to save the Earth from humanirty.

It is unfinished; currently collected in 18 volumes with no sign of the closing chapters.

But whilst the manga is somewhat difficult to recommend on the grounds of it not having an ending anytime soon (perhaps never having an ending?) the anime adaptations are different.

Let's take a quick squiz at them.

X: The Movie

Visually, the theatrical adaptation of X, directed by Rin "Metropolis" Taro, is a roaring success. The dark, surreal, and violent images are beautifully rendered and the earth-shattering action scenes are a knockout. The plot suffers from compression; the interesting supporting cast are introduced very quickly and given little to no development, the story focuses purely on the central character by sheer necessity. There's no other way to go about it, but anyone entranced by the animation will likely forgive the plot shortcomings, and the fact that it has a proper ending works in its favour.

Original Japanese track is the best here. The English dub script makes some questionable changes! Voices are rather good, so i watch it occasionally this way.

X: TV Series

Yoshiaki Kawajiri of Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, and Vampire Hunter D directed the television adaptation of X and it remains one of the best post 2000- anime series.

With time restraints no longer an issue, all the juicy character development missing from the movie comes to the forefront. The large cast of characters is one of the strongest features of X so this is very welcome, and it still manages to flow along towards the inevitable confrontations quickly too. The animation quality is great for TV but the movie has the edge in that regard. The film is also more violent, which is to be expected. The TV series offers up its own original ending, a satisfying ending that feels right for the series.

Japanese and English are good to go here. I like both.

I love LUPIN, however there's tons of it.
I've previously bought some TV specials and stuff on bootleg from ebay.
I also have two official DVD boxsets.

I'd agree about the animation in the movie though, one word - awesome.
